Things We Can Do To Help And Learn
This was supposed to be the point of Blackout Tuesday, not ruining an important Instagram hashtag

If you go to Instagram and click on the #blacklivesmatter hashtag, you will see a bunch of empty black squares. Those are from people who are trying to honor the Blackout Tuesday movement without quite understanding the plan.
The idea for white people — some are doing it until June 5 — is to amplify Black voices instead of promoting our own content. It’s a great idea, but too many people are using the #blacklivesmatter hashtag for the posts announcing their intention to take part. That means people using the hashtag to share important content are seeing their messages lost in a sea of black squares.
So, if you want to take part, use #muted, #blackouttuesday, or #shutupandlisten to demonstrate your willingness to share your platform without drowning out the people you’re trying to help.
